Sixth album "Pirate Lover" will be released in the autumn...!

The last few years has been quite a journey at home and abroad from sailing on a beautiful sailing ship around  the Aegean Sea to hanging out with the gypsies in the Camargue to a road trip through Patagonia on Route 40 to Kazakhstan where I was given a beautiful dombra.  In an attempt to explain some of this I will be updating my blog in the next few months with some of the photographs that I took and ephemera because all these places inspire my music.

Many of the instruments I play myself but this album features musicians far better than I.

They are Richard Moore on violin, Dave Barbarossa on drums, Josh Craig on guitar and pedals and effects and Will Ferguson on piano, clarinet and vocals - pictured below in my garden.

I also wish to thank the excellent Simone Filiali at Slipway Studios for recording drums.

I am still hoping to find a cellist and a singer for one particular track.

I spent a long time on this album thinking a lot about the sound.  I recorded it at home in a way that tries to capture live recording as much as possible.  This is largely because I have basic skills as an engineer so I can't edit very well so have to do takes in their entirety.

I have been so fortunate to be able to continue my musical journey despite the limited opportunity to do so due to work and family commitments.

I have played on the album in my limited way piano, keyboards, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, mandolin, balalaika, psaltery, dombra, harmonica, flute, treble recorder, mandolin, two different harmoniums, some percussion and my voice which of course is my least favourite thing of all!

One song uses the lyrics of a poet John Armstrong called 'Snowdrop'.   This painting is by Phyllis Dupuy.  We enjoyed discussing my putting more of his poems to music until he suddenly died last summer.  So to John I owe it to him to finish this.

David Baron and I continue to be great friends and he visited London recently.  I am so fortunate to have done all the music with him when I did because I realise that the pressure on young artists and the social media part of being a successful artist these days is beyond my capability.  I am not even on Instagram.  If I can find a theme and reason to improve my social media presence I will but presently I'm struggling with it.  I suppose I like the mystery of it all and I hold on to that dearly.
