The last few years has been quite extraordinary from sailing on a beautiful sailing ship with wooden masts around  the Aegean Sea to hanging out with the gypsies in the Camargue to a road trip through Patagonia on Route 40 to Kazakhstan where I was given a beautiful dombra.

I started to record Pirate Lover (my sixth album) over two years ago in windows of time largely in my sitting room in London with the exception of the drums.

At the same time, I began to collect instruments that I thought would give tonality to the music.  Some of the instruments, picked up at car boot sales, tabletop sales and charity shops would have limited capability such as the out of tune balalaika but I found the minimalist approach to songwriting suited the album.  Other instruments were wonderful gifts including a dombra from Kazakhstan and a Knight piano.  The psaltery handmade by Aidan Edwards in Argyll belongs to my mother.

I stepped on the accelerator for completing this album upon hearing my dentist had created several tracks with thousands of listeners on Spotify entirely created by AI!

The album was heavily edited to only 35 minutes.  Each of the songs are vignettes realised in my mind creating a sense of nostalgia like scenes in a film.  You Are My Sunshine was inspired by Sam Shepard’s performance of it bringing back the memory of when the family dog went missing for several weeks and my mother sung to him when he was found.

I want to thank the extraordinary musicians I invited to play on the album. Their professionalism and above all musicianship meant they all nailed it in one or two takes.

I have been recording since 2008 when I was invited to go the United States to record with David Baron at the Edison Studios in New York (which no longer exists).  Technology has changed so much since those days of Myspace and in some ways this album takes me full circle.  This album is dedicated to David Baron and Anthony Phillips and all those who have helped me along in my journey.
